Slow cooker questions

Can you cook slow cooker recipes in the oven?
Yes. As a rough guide, 8 hours on Low or 4 hours on High is close to 2–3 hours in a covered casserole dish at 150°C (fan 130°C / gas 2). Use a lidded pot, keep enough liquid in it, and check the dish is cooked through before serving.
Can you cook slow cooker recipes on the hob?
Most braises, stews and curries work on the hob in a heavy lidded pan over the lowest heat, usually in 1.5–2.5 hours. Stir occasionally and top up with liquid, because a hob loses more moisture than a sealed slow cooker.
Can you convert a slow cooker recipe to a pressure cooker?
Usually yes, but cut the liquid back — a pressure cooker barely loses any — and cook for a fraction of the time. Follow your pressure cooker's own timing chart for the main ingredient rather than scaling the slow cooker time.
How do I adapt an oven recipe for the slow cooker?
Reduce the liquid by around a third, brown meat and onions first if you want deeper flavour, and add dairy, fresh herbs or anything delicate near the end. Roughly, 1 hour in the oven becomes 6–8 hours on Low or 3–4 hours on High.
